You Can Heal the Waters: New Installation in Fuquay-Varina

Renee Leverty of Pleidies Gallery Durham (http://pleiadesartdurham.com) and I completed the installation Tuesday  for the Fuquay-Varina Downtown and Open Art Society collaboration , placing artists work in downtown storefronts.  Kelly Knapp also assisted in the creation.  Inspired by the theme of water in the call for proposals and the rich history of the town, we created You Can Heal the Waters at Family Optical on Broad St. Many thanks to Heather Allen, Jessica Moore, and Naomi Riley for making this happen!

The installation is inspired by the work of Dr. Masaru Emoto, from Japan, who studied the effects of words, thoughts, prayers and music on water. (http://www.masaru-emoto.net/english/water-crystal.html)  He believes that being, made of water, we can consciously alter it.  In the installation, there are bottles filled with water with words like love, prayer, joy,and  forgive hoping to inspire the viewer to project their positive consciousness on the water in the bottles that will then go into the creek by the original Fuquay healing spring and will flow to the sea, carrying the healing intentions with it.  Inside of the office,  you can also add your intentions , words, or wishes for the water.

The sculpture and drawings evoke the flow of water in the Cape Fear River Basin, which Fuquay -Varina and surrounding creeks are a part of.  Local advocates of this watershed can be found at The Cape fear River watch: http://www.capefearriverwatch.org/about-us/mission

The Cape Fear River watershed is an incredibly rich and diverse ecosystem, home to a wide range of plant and animal life, including ancient cypress trees, alligators, otters, black bear, a large variety of birds and a host of fish species. Cape Fear River Watch strives to protect this beautiful ecosystem for future generations to enjoy."

There are things you can do to heal the waters everyday such as conserving water, keeping plastic off the street and out of the storm drains, leaving a riparian buffer to filter run off around waterways (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riparian_buffer), and planting a chemical free lawn and garden.  


Water is life for all and we should protect our waterways everywhere, from the rivers to the sea, where all of the waters flow.

Mother's Day Gifts of Peonies and Iris

The onslaught of continuous cold weather in April created flower choices recently unusual for mid May.  These Mother's Day arrangements

100 days of 200 tulip bulbs:

I just planted 200 tulips bulbs from Eco Tulips 100% organic bee friendly in various colors! I am gathering names for those interested in purchasing when they bloom. They should blossom the first few weeks of spring. Bouquets consist of tulips, mint, rosemary or lavender and wildflowers . Bouquets will be $10.00 $15.00 and $20.00. Tulips ranging from numbers of 3-10 Join the event and get updates on the progress and a notification when they are in bloom and ready for pick up. Paradise on Earth  Durham, NC 2013

The Paradise Garden Project is a multi-media installation and community art project inspired  living botanical elements and art that speaks to the bounty and beauty of planet Earth created by artists with local roots and worldly aspirations.   It was be an exhibition the Carrack September 24 through October 5 and moved to Bull City Vineyard Church across the street at 118 Parish St Durham NC.   on October 6th and will be inter-activating the space until December 21 through The Durham Storefront Project.  It has been so wonderful to be able to   inspire a community collaborative of partnerships, ideas and exchanges inspired by the arts and we hope that this  can act as a prototype for other communities and future local events on similar themes about human impact on the web of life. 

 The installation at The Carrack explored the history of cultivation and imperialism, botanical recording, the age of the marvelous, nature in decorative arts, home grown produce , the loss of our paradise through non- sustainable practices and celebrates our own local paradise.  Artists had their own 2 and 3d work and also created an onsite Paradise Garden installation inspired by traditions of Persian, Ottoman and Elizabethan gardens through history combined with a contemporary infusion of local resources local artists, student intern’s and site specific inspiration.

(There will be more details about The Carrack exhibition in a future post.)  On October 6 part of the collaborators from The Carrack:  Lee Moore Crawford, Ben Greene,  Catherine Howard, Ann Marie Kennedy,  Jennifer Collins- Mancour, Tyler Nethers, Maryah Smith Overman and  Annie Spikes  transferred the installation to manifest in a collaboration with Bull City Vineyard Church led by Maggie Mraz and her members.  

The church has incorporated the themes of sustainability and Paradsie on earth and has embraced the Paradise Garden in their storefront cafe area.  They have also collaborated in the installation itself, making birds, butterflies and clouds and planting seeds.  We look forward to future communtiy collaborations with Bull City Vineyard as they tend their new garden and have a book club reading "Making Peace with the Land: Gods Call to Reconcile with Creation," by Fred Bahnson , a poetry reading and more art!
